Poor lighting and speed are being considered as contributing factors to a double fatal jet ski accident on the Fraser River.

A commercial vessel alerted police shortly around 9 p.m. after seeing an empty jet ski and two people floating unresponsive in the water near No. 4 Road Thursday evening.

BC Ambulance tried to revive the men, both in their 50s, but they could not be revived and were pronounced dead.

RCMP say there are indications the jet ski may have struck an object because of low lighting conditions as the sun was setting.

“We have some indication their watercraft may have hit something,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang of the Richmond RCMP.

“We believe the sunset at that time was shortly after 8 p.m. so that’s a contributing factor we’re considering.”

The duo was wearing life jackets but sustained “severe head trauma” in the accident.

They have been identified as Richmond residents Ramanjit Bachra and Salinder Burmy, both 56.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Richmond RCMP.
