While delivering a profound commitment to creating innovative design solutions, Hetherwick Studio’s dedication to inventive thinking and the art of discovering the hidden potential of materials has achieved a working organisation of collaborative rational inquiry, carried out in a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. Thomas Heatherwick, designer, inventor and founder of Heatherwick Studios, will present a series of his studio’s projects, both in Asia and elsewhere, with a focus on the rigorous process of critical thinking and questioning that goes into the studio’s design process. Thomas’ upcoming exhibition New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio will provide the framework for this lecture, with an exclusive insight into projects from the past 20 years of Heatherwick Studios, including ideas and experiments that have played a part in realizing projects that span architecture and engineering, as well as furniture, sculpture and product design. The exhibition is co-presented by the British Council, the GREAT Britain campaign and PMQ, with Swire Properties and KEF as the lead partners.
Thomas Heatherwick is a British designer whose prolific and varied work over two decades is characterised by its ingenuity, inventiveness and originality. Defying the conventional classification of design disciplines, Thomas founded Heatherwick Studio in 1994 to bring the practices of design, architecture, sculpture and urban planning together in a single workspace. Thomas leads the design of all Heatherwick Studio projects, working in collaboration with a team of 170 highly skilled architects, designers, and makers. Thomas’ unusual approach challenges every brief from first principles, to produce unique solutions for each project’s needs. Thomas trained in three-dimensional design in Manchester and at the Royal College of Art in London, and has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a Royal Academician and in 2004 became the youngest Royal Designer for Industry.
