Liverpool managed to offload Mario Balotelli for a season loan to AC Milan, but he will still cost them around £1million this season. The club have also agreed a season loan with Fenerbahce for Lazar Markovic.

An agreement with Milan was confirmed in a 53-word statement on Liverpool's website, a reflection of how tired they became with Balotelli's ability to hog attention.

Balotelli waived 20 per cent of his Liverpool salary of £110,000-a-week to secure his return to Milan, who are prepared to pay 60 per cent of his current wages. The remaining 20 per cent - £22,000 a week - will still be paid by Liverpool.

Over the course of 12 months, that means Liverpool will have to pay him £1m and the deal includes no guarantee of a permanent move at the end of the season.

"I must accept my faults but the formation chosen by Rodgers was not suited to my characteristics," Balotelli told 'Gazzetta dello Sport'. "I never complained - I accepted the decisions of the manager and always behaved professionally."
