The Methodist Church in Fiji plans to set up a welfare scheme that would benefit all ministers, church leaders and its members as part of the Lako Yani Vou.

During the Methodist Church Annual Conference general secretary Reverend Epineri Vakadewavosa said the Methodist Church in Australia was leading the charge while the Methodist Church in Tonga was undergoing its successful process.

“The welfare scheme is on its preliminary stage and it’s a new thing for the Methodist Church in Fiji as it is part of the Lako Yani Vou,” he said.

The idea behind the welfare scheme is to help our church ministers and leaders meet the high cost of living including insurance cover, health, etc.

Reverend Vakadewavosa said the welfare scheme plan was well-received by the ministers, church leaders and members yesterday.

“Most of our ministers never get paid for almost six months and nearly a year after leaving one circuit to serve in another circuit and with their poor salary, we have come up with plans like this because we want to improve on that,” he said.

“This is also another way we can help serve our community better because social service is also one of our main visions as part of the Lako Yani Vou.”

He said the levy by the Methodist Church go to institutions that belonged to the church like the Veilomani Home, Dilkusha Home, Deaconess Order, etc.
