Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV Friday

Patrick Wymore/SHOWTIME

Ray Donovan Sunday at 9 p.m., Showtime

The braces, oh the braces. They’re one of those stupid “Ray Donovan” things, like the bad Boston accents, that make the show such an entertaining grate-watch. Katie Holmes’s chic and wealthy Paige Finney, daughter of Ian McShane’s latest spin on Al Swearengen, Andrew Finney, has braces on her teeth — and not the clear kind, because that wouldn’t be as much fun. Paige, Holmes told Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan last month, is “very strong and very tough but she’s also very vulnerable. So the braces to us was a metaphor.” A metaphor that this highly addictive series is bracketed in badness?

Show Me a Hero Sunday at 9 p.m., HBO

The final two hours of David Simon’s miniseries bring us into the low-income Yonkers townhouses that finally get built after years of turmoil. We also find out how the neighbors cope with the reality of having black people across the street from them. Hint: not well. The story is tragic, for reasons I won’t spoil here, but it also offers up a few glimmers of hope, particularly in the character played by Catherine Keener.

The Hustler Saturday at 8 p.m., TCM

Does TCM have a shark week too?

Hannibal Saturday at 10 p.m., NBC

The MTV Video Music Awards Sunday at 9 p.m., MTV
