The trailer for Davis Guggenheim’s documentary “He Named Me Malala” depicting Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai’s battle for equal rights has just debuted online.
“I tell my story not because it is unique,” Yousafzai says in the trailer. “It is the story of many girls.”
Yousafzai, named after the Afghan warrior who died in battle, was shot in the head for championing girls’ education in Pakistan.
The trailer shows Yousafzai delivering speeches and recounting her experience with the Taliban and meeting celebrities such as Jon Stewart and Bono and dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth. It also reveals what her family life is like.
“I’m still 17,” Yousafzai says as the trailer shows her playing cards and teaching her father to tweet. “I’m still a teenager.”
Guggenheim’s “He Named Me Malala” opens in theaters on Oct. 2, with National Geographic set to air the film next year in 171 countries and 45 languages. The film’s release will coincide with an international advocacy and fundraising campaign in partnership with the Malala Fund, Yousafzai’s nonprofit organization that aims to empower adolescent girls globally through quality secondary education.
