A second road sign-related blow has been suffered by a Leicestershire town.

The notice directing traffic to the local football club misspelt 'Coalville' as 'Coalvile'.

The sign was close to the town centre near Mantle Lane. The county council has apologised said it was investigating the error.

It comes soon after new brown signs promoting "additional Coalville tourist attractions" were criticized for being too vague.

The nearby Snibston Discovery Museum closed last month and notices to it were quickly replaced by new ones pointing to "additional" destinations.

'Waste of money'

Some residents felt this was not enough information to encourage visitors. The county council said it was trying to declutter road signs.

Coalville Town fan and Labour county councillor for Whitwick and Thringstone, Leon Spence, said: "When I first heard, I couldn't believe it, I had to go down and check.

"Clearly no-one is asking for heads to roll but it shows a lack of thoroughness and sensitivity and, at this time of diminishing resources, it's a waste of time and money."

The sign has now been removed.

A county council spokesperson said: "We would like to apologise for any offence this mistake has caused.

"As soon as we were made aware of the error we took action to ensure the sign was removed immediately."

They added a replacement sign has been ordered and additional checks would be carried out on all signs before they are installed.
