Glymur trail safety concerns

Two accidents have occurred this year on the trail up to Iceland’s second-highest waterfall Glymur, in western Iceland.

According to Kjartan S. Þorsteinsson of the Akranes Search and Rescue Team, signage on the trail is lacking, making it dangerous for tourists.

The river cutting through the trail is particularly problematic. It can only be crossed by stepping along a log while holding onto a suspended wire or by wading through the water, which at times flows very strongly.

In April, two people fell into the cold river, just managing to claw themselves to safety. This month, a lady broke her ankle on the walking trail.

“This is not a risk-free trail and signage is lacking,” warns Þorsteinsson. “Both guidance signs and danger signs. Some improvements have been made […] but more needs to be done.”
