Are you in Mahabalipuram, soaking in Pallava heritage? Then, you can surf the internet for free for the first half hour on your smartphone or tablet.

Just last week, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) launched its WiFi hotspot service at the Shore Temple, a world heritage monument.

After the free minutes, users can extend their browsing time by opting for 30-minute, 60-minute, 120-minute or 24- hour packs offered by BSNL at Rs.30, Rs.50, Rs.90 and Rs.150, respectively.

Just as the system usually works in public spots, once the smartphone enters the hotspot area within a 500-metre radius, it automatically senses the WiFi signal. The signal can be activated by enrolling the mobile number and email id of the smartphone owner.

Upon enrolling the mobile number, a one-time verification code will be forwarded to the smartphone, which has to be fed in the slot available in the WiFi application for establishing the connection. Stating that the service could not be clubbed with other data tariff vouchers, sources that the half-an-hour free browsing time would be available for three days in a month for the same number.
