Samajwadi Party and BJP MLAs traded barbs over Governor Ram Naik in the state Assembly on Wednesday with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan claiming that “Raj Bhavan should not be made ‘Rajnitik Bhavan’ and the BJP should not cover the Governor in saffron clothes”.

Speaking on Uttar Pradesh Nagar Nigam (Amendment) Bill-2015 — which curtails the power of Mayors, including their removal — is awaiting Governor’s approval, Khan said: “The bill has not been returned. It is not Jauhar University’s bill. The Governor’s conduct should be impartial. If there was any objection, it should have been returned with a note. If he is angry with me personally, then there are other ways. Democracy should not be throttled.”

BJP leader Suresh Khanna, meanwhile, claimed that discussions cannot be held on Governor’s act.

To this, Handicapped Welfare Minister Ambika Choudhary said: “The system works in a democratic manner. If decorum is broken, it is an invitation for getting insulted.”

Festive offer

Following this, BJP MLAs went on to oppose SP’s verbal attack against the Governor.

Azam Khan again chipped in: “Those who killed Bapu talk about Constitution. Don’t places where there is no Governor have democracy? Democracy will not function according to the pattern of the Britishers. I did not say what he (Naik) says about Ayodhya. He has to keep the honour of Governor’s decorum, as he lives in Raj Bhavan and not Rajnitik Bhawan. If one wants to live in Rajnitik Bhawan, he should come here.”

To this, BJP members demanded that Khan’s comments against “constitutional values” be removed. Khan again responded by saying that BJP should consider it seriously that the Governor belongs to every one. “Do not drape him in bhagwa (saffron) clothes,” he added.

During Zero Hour, BJP MLA Satish Mahana again tried to raise the issue of controversy over the appointment of the state Lokayukta. “People want to know about the matter, as a question mark is being raised on the state government’s honesty,” Mahana said. To this, Azam Khan said: “If Lokayukta is discussed, the Governor will also be discussed, as he is creating hurdles.”

Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey, however, did not allow the discussion.
