Khana and gaana

With decades and decades of Bollywood behind us, we’ve been exposed to a variety of lyrics – some soulful and some downright obnoxious. But there’s also the kind that bring a smile to our face in a fun sort of way. We’ve seen heroes and heroines croon lyrics of love, passion, and sadness and of the lighter moments in a film and sometimes these songs take a turn for the delicious when our lyricists compare the stars on screen to food. And with the recent release of the song Afghan Jalebi from Phantom, we take a trip down the musical lane and bring you songs that have a quirky connect with food. Check ‘em out…

Song: Afghan Jalebi

Film: Phantom (2015)

Comparing a rather mysterious and sexy looking Katrina Kaif to the spangled sweet, the song talks of the sweet attraction that the singer feels for her and pursues her with this song.

Song: Chicken song

Film: Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

The song provided the near perfect solution to most people’s hunger – chicken, in all its glorious tandoori forms. Sung as a respite for the forlorn and hungry Munni, the song made our hearts melt and the picturisation surely made our mouths water!

Song: Ice-cream khaungi

Film: Expose (2014)

Zoya Afroz seems to have the perfect recipe for beating the heat in this song, with the hook line “ice cream khaungi, kashmir jaungi”, which is exceedingly catchy. Though the film gave us nothing but laughs, the song caught on quite a bit.

Song: Main rang sharbaton ka

Film: Phata Poster Nikla Hero (2013)

A melodious love song that rocked all the music charts for a long time after its release, this song from the Shahid Kapor – Ileana Dcruz comedy had all the ingredients for a sweet sherbet-like expression of love.

Song: Jalebi bai

Film: Double Dhamaal (2011)

Katrina in Phantom was not the first time jalebis and actresses were paired together. Mallika Sherawat’s sexy jig in this song was quite tantalizing to watch.

Song: The mutton song

Film: Luv Ka The End (2011)

One of the very few raunchy item numbers by our leading men, we saw then newcomer Taaha Shah show off his moves and liken himself to mutton on a plate when dressed in drag. Hungry for more? Most definitely!

Song: Mohabbat hai mirchi

Film: Chura Liya Hai Tumne (2003)

A sizzling song about the spicy and smoking hot nature of love had to have just one parallel – a mirchi. A peppy number that topped all charts even though the movie made much less of an impact.

Song: Ande ka funda

Film: Jodi No 1 (2001)

Govinda seems to share a rather interesting relationship with food, especially when it comes to his movies. Using the humble ‘anda’ to explain the meaning and philosophy of life, this quirky party number can still get us on our feet.

Song: Ek garam chai ki pyaali ho

Film: Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega…(2000)

When a hot cup of tea became a part of Salman Khan’s criteria to find a suitable girl in Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega, we knew he meant business. From the scenic beaches to the beautiful women and Salman’s charm above all, this song is a recipe for awesomeness.

Song: Hai Hai Mirchi

Film: Biwi No. 1 (1999)

Karisma Kapoor in a glamorous and seductive avatar is nothing short of a fiery chilli on the plate, tempting enough to make one go “Uff”. And Anil Kapoor’s Daler Mehendi-esque look and mannerisms make this song all the more memorable.

Song: Wah ji wah

Film: Duplicate (1998)

Shah Rukh Khan inverts the adage that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach by cooking up a delectable feast to impress Juhi Chawla in this cute song. Showcasing the best side of the kitchen, it was an innovative way to bring food and love together.

Song: Jab tak rahega samose mein aaloo

Film: Mr and Mrs Khiladi (1997)

Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla showed us what a made-for-each-other couple is all about when they compared their pairing to a samosa and its filling – inseparable and eternal. Aww!

Song: Main toh raste se jaa raha tha

Film: Coolie No. 1 (1995)

When Govinda and Karisma Kapoor met while gorging on chaat and ice cream, it was not only a fun story to tell after, but also a party on screen. Flirting has never been more fun than this!

Song: You are my chicken fry

Film: Rock Dancer (1995)

If there’s one song that can make you hunger for food as much as it can convey your feelings to your loved one, it’s this Bappi Lahiri number from the 1995 movie Rock Dancer. Watch and learn!

Song: Doodh ban jaaungi malai ban jaaungi

Film: Sarhad (1995)

Whoever said seduction was not possible with food? With a woman ready to become anything a man would want on a platter, from milk to malai to kebabs and fish, what more could one ask for?

Song: Chocolate, lime juice

Film: Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)

There’s no better way to describe what a girl is all about than by listing down the things she enjoys to eat. Madhuri aka Nisha in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! sang about her favourite junk foods that are in the past now as she comes of age.

Song: Imli ka boota

Film: Saudagar (1991)

There has probably never been a game of Antakshari without this song in play and the depiction of friendship and camaraderie in this song is too loveable to miss.

Song: Batata vada

Film: Hifazat (1987)

In a slightly bizarre set of lyrics, the attraction between Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit Nene was described through a batata vada. Whether it was used purely to match the rhyme or not is unknown, but it surely piqued our interest!

Song: Chana jor garam

Film: Kranti (1981)

Who doesn’t love a good street-side snack? And when it’s being served by Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini in the most upbeat style, there’s no way that you can say no. Fun fact: this song was one of the most popular numbers from this film’s discography.

Song: Khaike paan Benaras waala

Film: Don (1978)

This song taught us that a good old Benarasi paan was the secret to unlocking the intelligence and cunning that a character like Don needed to fight off his enemies. One of the most fun numbers of all time, it glorifies the paan like no other!
