In Chennai, about 55 roads are going to be much better than the rest.

The Corporation has relaid these roads, will undertake coloured lane-marking this week, the stagnant water in nearby areas will be drained out and even some key Metro Rail sites may get artwork, or even a fresh coat of paint. Thanks to the Global Investors Meet.

The Chennai Corporation has relaid these 55 roads — leading to luxury hotels, heritage sites and the Chennai Trade Centre. The stretches that receive a makeover are likely to be frequented by more than 3,000 delegates of the two-day event that will be held at the Chennai Trade Centre, sources said.

Chennai Corporation and other government agencies started a major road-makeover project along 194 stretches a few months ago, but decided to give priority to 40 bus routes, 15 interior roads and ten highways for the Global Investors’ Meet. Following completion of work on carriageway of all the roads, coloured lane-marking will be done this week.

Delegates from eight partner countries and 30 non-partner countries are expected to take such roads to reach 33 of the important hotels and heritage sites.

“The interior roads have been identified near areas such as Triplicane, Mylapore, MRC Nagar, Boat Club and Nandambakkam. A suggestion for fresh painting or artwork on metal cladding at Metro Rail sites has been made at a meeting on Monday. Such sites remain an eyesore. A decision may be made shortly,” an official said.

The stretches receiving a makeover include Sardar Patel Road, TTK Road, Santhome High Road, St. Marys Road, Greams Road, Greenways Road, General Patters Road, Kodambakkam High Road, Kutchery Road, Pantheon Road, Anna Salai, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Poonamallee High Road and East Coast Road.

“Incomplete work on footpaths along highway stretches such as Anna Salai remains a concern,” officials said.

The Corporation will also complete work on clearing of bushes near the Chennai Trade Centre shortly. The Public Works Department will clean canals and open the river mouth to reduce mosquito density.

On Monday, Chennai Corporation started to drain stagnant water at Chennai Trade Centre that served as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
