The first prescription drug to enhance women's sexual drive won regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration recently, clinching a victory for a lobbying campaign that had accused the FDA of gender bias for ignoring the sexual needs of women.
The drug -Addyi- is actually the first drug approved to treat a flagging or absent libido for women, but the million dollar question is, will it serve as a catalyst to bring sexual liberation in the real sense to women in countries like India, or will it remain another gimmicky exercise meant for the select few?
WILL GIVE VOICE TO WOMEN
There are many who believe that in our society, the introduction of such a drug would give voice to women who are forced to suppress their sexuality early in life.
Yoga guru Vivek Mishra, who advocates the causes of complete equality, shared: "Despite all the education and financial equality, there are very few women in our society, who can express their sexual needs to their partner. It is mostly the man, who has a say and the physical needs of the women are blatantly ignored. If men are openly taking Viagra, I feel it is a step in the right direction if women also get such an option."
HELP SOLVE MEDICAL DILEMMAS
Along with sexual freedom, the drug is also meant to provide respite to those whose libido has diminished due to medical problems. Endorsing this view, sexologist Dr Prakash Kothari said: "If a woman has a medical problem, then she can still attain physical pleasure by using this drug. But the basic requisite is that desire for the partner has to be there. In those cases, where women find their partners' behaviour or odour from alcohol nauseating, merely taking the drug will not help. Even in cases like depression or schizophrenia, it would not be effective. The basic love for the partner and desire to connect with him can be enhanced through this drug, but desire can't be created where no connection exists between the two partners."
IT'S ALL ABOUT CHOICE!
Medical issues apart, women's Viagra certainly gives more power to the fairer sex to exert its own choices. And nobody has the right to frown upon those who choose to exert their choices. Model-turned actress Rozlyn Khan endorsed this viewpoint as she said: "Today when men rave and rant about the equal rights of all the sexes, I really hope Indian husbands and boyfriends respect their women's choice to use such a drug if medical assistance is needed in their case."
FRIGIDITY IS A MYTH
There is no denying the fact that the approval of women's Viagra has made feminists ecstatic around the world, but there are many who strongly feel that lack of sexual desire in a woman casts aspersion on her man. Actress Deepshikha Nagpal is of this view: “Frigidity is a myth created by impotent men. A healthy woman would not need such a drug if her man invokes feelings of love and passion in her. A drug is a stop-gap arrangement, but in the longer run, it is the love of your partner that brings ultimate satisfaction to a woman. Here, it is also important for women to speak about their needs, just like men do.“
BUNCH OF FLOWERS WORK BETTER
After the clearance from the FDA, it would take a few months for the drug to enter the MARKET. But, in a repressed society like India, will it l be easy to sell such a product to women, who still get embarrassed asking for sanitary napkins and contraceptives from a medical store? Ad guru Bharat Dabholkar admitted that it will be a tough call to sell Viagra to Indian women and added: "Earlier when f vaginal tightening cream was sold to Indian women, the attempt was not very successful because women, despite having been liberated on all fronts, still remain repressed sexually.
So, this drug will have to be sold differently in a more subtle manner. Though personally, I feel a romantic dinner and a bunch of flowers can work better than any Viagra pill in a man woman relationship. For most of the men, sex is about shedding of clothes and begins and ends in the bedroom in the night. But the fact is that romantic sex begins with love, smiles and caring right in the morning and culminates in lasting satisfaction."
