Monsoon session of Gujarat Assembly to start on tense note today

Surat city and Mehsana district continued to be under curfew.

The monsoon session of the Gujarat assembly is due to open on a tense note on Wednesday as the areas of Ghatlodia and Naranpura in Ahmedabad remained tense. Violence was reported in several parts of Gujarat on Tuesday night after a police crackdown on the protesters belonging to the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS). The group’s 21-year-old leader Hardik Patel was also briefly detained by police.

In the wee hours of Wednesday, a mob set a civic centre ablaze in Ghatlodia, an area dominated by Patidars.

Around 10 am, a huge mob gathered at the railway tracks passing through Ghatlodia and leading to Sabarmati, and stopped a coal carrying goods train and began damaging the tracks, even as a police van was set ablaze near Akhbarnagar, in Naranpura.

Also, a mob of around 2,000 people began removing the railway tracks in Ghatlodia. Photographers were warned against taking pictures as the crowd damaged mobile phones of two persons who tried to take pictures. Surat city and Mehsana district continued to be under curfew.
