Johannesburg - The North West ANC Youth League has been lobbying around the country for its chairperson Collen Maine's candidacy for league president.
"What we have done as a province... we have mandated the provincial secretary of the ANCYL in the province to lead a team of engagement with other structures of the organisation across the country," Maine told News24 on Tuesday.
"The PEC [provincial executive committee] is due to get a report from a team that is led by the provincial secretary of the youth league, comrade Sipho Dial to say how far he has gone in terms of engagement with other structures of the organisation."
However, he said the congress of the ANCYL was a congress of branches who would ultimately decide who is elected president.
The ANCYL has not had a leader since 2013 when its leadership structures were disbanded by the ANC.
It has taken the league two years to hold the congress which is expected to be held from September 4 to 6, after some delays.
There were allegations that the congress was delayed earlier this year because of interference by the so-called premier league which was trying to impose their preferred candidate on the ANCYL.
The candidate is alleged to be Maine.
Other ANCYL presidential hopefuls are former deputy president Ronald Lamola, Tshwane regional chairperson Lesego Makhubela and former treasurer and ANC MP Pule Mabe.
Maine, who is also the North West local government and human settlements MEC, said the North West was holding its provincial general council on Saturday where it will make its final pronouncement on who it wants to lead the ANCYL.
"As a member of the youth league in good standing, I have the right to elect and to be elected.
"I will then, after the PGC pronounces itself, accept nomination because I can't say to members of the youth league no I don't want to stand," he said.
