“We met the Army chief at his South Block office. I was present in the meeting for nearly half-an-hour after which I left South Block, leaving behind Gen Satbir Singh and Gen Balbir Singh..they were in South Block till late evening. The Army chief offered us various options to break the deadlock..but we have not agreed,” Group Captain V K Gandhi, general secretary, IESM said. Gandhi said besides the disagreement over adherence to basic demands, there was deadlock over the date of implementation of OROP. While the government has been proposing to impose it from the current year, the veterans have been demanding it retrospectively from 2014.
Earlier on Tuesday, Havildar Ashok Chauhan, who has been on a fast-unto-death since August 18, was admitted to hospital, citing deterioration of health. On Monday, Col Pushpender Singh, also fasting in demand of OROP implementation, was hospitalised.
