BBMP polls: BJP scaled odds to score 100

Last minute doling out of goodies by Siddaramaiah government failed to impress voters

BENGALURU: The ruling BJP in the BBMP had to cross many hurdles in order to reach the magic figure of 100. It has to contend with low voter turnout; anti-incumbency; Congress government in the state and revision of wards reservation. Earlier in the day, some senior BJP leaders were caught off guard when the poll trends showed that their party had an advantage over the rivals. Later it even managed to secure a simple majority. The Congress party’s efforts to cash in on BJP’s anti-incumbency backfired.

As the BJP retained the BBMP council for second straight term, DC looks at the election outcome. A senior legislator from BJP said that the Congress-led state government tried everything to defeat BJP, but failed. They dissolved BJP-led BBMP council, alleging corruption and maladministration. Then they succeeded in postponing the BBMP polls and tried to woo voters by doling out goodies in the form of infrastructure development. Projects worth crores of rupees were announced just before elections, the legislator added.

According to sources, the Congress move to revise wards reservation was aimed to ensure that many of the sitting BJP candidates are unable to contest. Out of BJP 112 candidates in the outgoing council only 26 could contest. But this move too did not work in state government’s and Congress party’s favour.

Interestingly, wives of ten former BJP candidates managed to win comfortably, thereby sending a clear message that the party’s roots were strong in Bengaluru. The only exception was BJP Yelahanka MLA S.R. Vishwanath’s wife Vanisri Vishwanath, who suffered a humiliating defeat from Yelahanka Upanagara.

The BJP has made its presence felt at all the 28 constituencies and has made a clean sweep at Basavanagudi constituency, by winning all six wards. The party managed to get one seat each at Shivajinagar and Mahalakshmi Layout constituencies. But, Congress has failed to make their presence felt at Basavanagudi and Bengaluru South, where it has only one seat. Getting one ward each at Yelahanka, Bommanahalli, Jayanagar and Padmanabhanagar was a face saver for Congress.

Congress tried to postpone polls, and paid the price: Amit Shah

BJP national president Amit Shah on Tuesday said the BBMP poll results would be an indicator of the results of future elections in Karnataka. En route to Chennai, he congratulated the party’s city unit and leaders. Mr Shah told reporters at the airport, “This is a clear mandate against the state government. It is impossible to win the mandate by manoeuvring the law (splitting the BBMP). This is a clear indication of what would turn out in the future elections in Karnataka.”

He was of the opinion that people voted for the BJP considering the good work done by the BJP government at Centre. People proved that only through work, a party could win the confidence of people. “I hope the state government would learn the lesson. They (Congress) tried to postpone the elections but people taught them a lesson,” he said. Party state unit president, Pralhad Joshi, city unit president Subba Narasimha, former deputy chief minister, R. Ashok and V. Somanna were among those present on the occasion.
