$228,000 in Counterfeit Cash Found at Miami International Airport

More than $228,000 in counterfeit U.S. money was seized from a package at Miami International Airport, officials said.

Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection found the counterfeit cash in a package arriving from Peru on July 23.

The officers had selected the package for examination and saw an unusual pattern in an X-ray, officials said. The package contained cushions that were cut open to reveal 11 sets of plastic covers taped together holding the money.

The bills were of poor quality and the U.S. Secret Service determined them to be counterfeit.

"This seizure is an excellent example of the critical role CBP plays in preventing counterfeit currency from entering the United States," Miami International Airport Port Director Christopher Maston said in a statement. "Our officers collaborate daily with other agencies, such as the U.S. Secret Service, to accomplish CBP’s mission."
