Remember the scene in 3 Idiots when Raju Rastogi’s (Sharman Joshi’s character) mother talks about the rising prices of groceries and remarks that paneer will be soon be like gold, sold by goldsmiths in tiny packets?
Well, it turns out that she was actually not that far off the mark. The skyrocketing price of onions has actually prompted not one, but two thefts of onions , as thought it were a precious metal and not a mere vegetable, and states have put in place elaborate safety measures to guard this precious cargo.
But while the average consumer is lamenting inflation and netizens are googling recipes that do not require onions, the Twitterati are using this as an opportunity to come up with snarky jokes. Indeed, Twitter is probably the only place in India where the rise in onion prices is funny.
No one steals gold anymore. Onion is more precious. Thank you acche din. #TheGreatOnionRobbery https://t.co/l2yGItguyP
