Karnataka Police is all set to launch a first of its kind mobile application to help follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) at a crime scene. The initiative will be taken to minimise human errors.

Alok Mohan, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), feels that in their first visit to a crime spot, investigators forget to stick to the SOP. Some minor evidence can help solve cases and the collection and examination of such evidence is critical to investigate a case. He further added, “The application will guide the investigators from their very first visit to a scene of crime.”

The app has been developed under the Karnataka Government’s eGovernance initiative. Director General and Inspector General of Police ST Ramesh was the first to introduce an investigating officer’s kit and tapes to cordon crime scenes.

According to the police investigation manual, a scene of crime must be carefully examined for physical and chemical evidence, as anything can give a lead.

DCP (Crime) R Ramesh supervising the Central Crime Branch, said, “ Minor evidences like nails, hairs, blood stains, among other things, are often overlooked by investigators. In each police station, four-five constables will be trained in collecting and protecting evidence from crime sites. There are chances that they might forget what they read or hear. Hence, this application will be with them to act effectively.
