County Championship: Notts beat Warwickshire to go third

Nottinghamshire beat Warwickshire by an innings and 123 runs to move up to third in the Division One table.

After resuming on 42-0 at Trent Bridge, Bears opener William Porterfield lasted over four hours in making 61.

Warwickshire looked comfortable at 142-4 but Samit Patel (4-23) struck in successive overs to give Notts hope.

Riki Wessels took a stunning catch as Steven Mullaney (2-35) got rid of Keith Barker, before Patel wrapped the game up with the wicket of Boyd Rankin.

Warwickshire lost four wickets before lunch including Jonathan Trott for 22. But Porterfield, in his first four-day game since late May, and Tim Ambrose steadied things by putting on 31 at less than two an over.

Patel's double strike then changed the course of the innings, the Notts and England one-day international all-rounder trapping Ambrose lbw for 12 before bowling Porterfield an over later.

After Wessels took a low one-handed catch at short leg to dismiss Barker, and with the light fading, Mullaney also had Jeetan Patel (28) caught by James Taylor driving to point.

Patel then took the new ball to help earn Notts' fifth win of the season, removing Chris Wright leg before, then having Rankin caught at short leg.

Warwickshire director of cricket Dougie Brown:

"We were always battling to save the game and that's not where we want to be.

"For them to get 600 on that wicket in the first innings was far too many and for us to get 260 was not enough, so somewhere in the middle there should be some balance.

"To leave us hanging on, on the last day, as we were, is disappointing because it doesn't give you any chance to be where we wanted to be - and that's winning the game."
