American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), previously not ranked, knocked off No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) 19-7 to crack the Super 25 high school football rankings at No. 18. While it was a preseason game and so will not count toward either team’s record, it was a full-length game with the starters playing late into the game.

IMG trailed the reigning 5A state champion Patriots 13-7 with nine seconds left when it had a touchdown pass from Shea Patterson to wide receiver Drake Davis nullified by a holding penalty. On the next play, Patterson was intercepted by American Heritage’s Nick Eubanks, who returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. Jason Brown threw two touchdown passes for the Patriots, including one to Eubanks. IMG dropped to No. 22 with the loss.

The Ascenders would have fallen even more except for their difficult schedule and the closeness of the game. They get another test this Sunday when they play host to Miramar, which was a 2011 state runner-up and a state champion in 2009. American Heritage travels to Stephenson (Stone Mountain), which was a AAAAA quarterfinalist last season. Former No. 23 South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) dropped out of the rankings. While the Tigers defeated Clinton, 35-25 on Friday, they did so with dangerous lack of balance, completing neither of their two passing attempts.
