Rohan Dennis wins cycling's US Pro challenge

Australian star Rohan Dennis has completed his domination of the US Pro Challenge, taking out the overall title.

The BMC rider is the first non-American to win the Colorado event in its five-year history.

It is Dennis' second stage-race overall win this year, after taking out January's Tour Down Under in Adelaide.

Last month, Dennis also took out the stage-one time trial at the Tour de France and became only the seventh Australian to wear the famous yellow jersey.

BMC were outstanding in the seven-day Pro Challenge, with Dennis taking out two stages, finishing runner-up on two others and also winning the king of the mountain category.

Brent Bookwalter finished second overall and fellow American teammate Davis Phinney also won the opening stage.

Dennis paid a small price at the post-race celebrations – a teammate accidentally knocked the bottle as the Australian was having a swig of champagne and that dislodged the filling in a front tooth.

"Now it's a little rough on my tongue – but it adds character," Dennis told cyclingnews.

Dennis launched an attack late in the last stage, saying he was trying to set up Phinney. But Phinney finished second behind American John Murphy (UnitedHealthcare), while Dennis was safely in the bunch at 24th place.

Dennis was 40 seconds ahead of Bookwalter in the final general classification.

"I had a lot of fun this week and hopefully I can come back next year and do it again," Dennis said.

"I have to take my hat off to the team – they never put any pressure on me.

"I came here to help Brent originally, then found my legs, and ended up taking the yellow jersey.

"I have to thank him for quietly supporting me for the general classification."
