Sudanese government and armed opposition groups urged to end human rights violations

The Sudanese government and armed opposition groups in the country are being urged by the United Nations to end widespread impunity of serious human rights violations in Darfur.

A new report by the United Nations human rights office, OHCHR, says the killings and rape in the strife-torn region last year have largely been dismissed by local police and underreported by victims due to a lack of trust in the authorities. 
Of the 411 cases of alleged abuse documented by the joint African Union-UN mission in the country, UNAMID, very few were investigated or resulted in arrests. The human rights agency says the report's findings paint a "grim picture" of a much broader pattern of violence.More from OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani....
