Parents of Irishman in alleged one-punch attack in Australia rush to be by son's side

Jason Cierans (29) from Cork, was hospitalised after he was allegedly punched to the ground by Adrian Gabriel Martinez (30) in Sydney, in what is believed to be a ‘one punch’ attack.

Argentinian man Mr Martinez has been charged with recklessly causing grievously bodily harm to a young Irish man outside the Tea Gardens pub in Bondi Junction at 1am on Saturday morning.

It is understood the incident happened after a row over jumping a queue.

Jason Cierans is believed to be in a critical but stable condition.

Mr Martinez appeared in front of Parramatta bail court in Sydney on Sunday via video link but was automatically refused bail by magistrate John McIntosh.

Another 27-year-old man involved in the incident has been charged with affray and was granted conditional bail to appear in Waverley local court on September 24.

In footage shown on Australian news TV, paramedics can be seen treating the victim on Bronte Road in the Bondi Junction area of the city.

Since the attack Mr Cierans has been placed in a medically induced coma at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and has reportedly undergone surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the department is providing consular assistance to an Irish citizen injured in Sydney.
