WAFL Round 23: West Perth holds key to finals

West Perth holds the fate of Swan Districts in their hands in the final home and away rounds of WAFL fixtures.

With second spot seemingly sealed and a home final (all being equal) in the first round of finals, the Falcons may choose to sit a few players out in their round 23 clash against Claremont.

Despite missing the last game, Shane Yarran should have the goal kicking honour wrapped up.

Despite missing the last game, Shane Yarran should have the goal kicking honour wrapped up.

To do so, and lose, would have serious ramifications for the make up of the final five though. Swan Districts are sitting fifth on the ladder, but have a bye next weekend. If the Tigers get up against the Falcon, they will leapfrog the Swans into fifth spot.

But if West Perth decides to hone their performances before the finals and play a full-strength side against Claremont – and win – Swan Districts will continue to the elimination final, probably against East Perth, the final week.

Subiaco 16.17 (113) defeated East Fremantle 5.6 (36)

Matt Boland kicked 4.1 and Kyle Halligan 3.2 for the Lions. Chris Phelan 33 touches.
The Sharks managed just 27 inside 50s to Subiaco's 72. Only three East Fremantle players managed 20 possessions or more.
Shane Yarran missed the game, a late withdrawal due to a hip injury. But he should have the goal kicking honour wrapped up. With one round to go, the Lion has 44 goals, eight more than Claremont's Jack Bradshaw (36) and 10 more than West Perth's Michael Lourey.

West Perth 12.13 (85) defeated South Fremantle 9.8 (62)

The Bulldogs actually hit the lead early in the final term, but managed just 2.0 for the quarter, to West Perth's 4.3.
Aaron Black was back to his best for the Falcons, with 33 touches, although inaccurate in front of goals, with 0.2. Matt Fowler booted 6.3.
Ryan Cook took 10 marks for the Dogs and booted 2.2 from 25 possessions. Kyle Hams had 32 and his brother Ashton 39.

Swan Districts 9.14 (68) defeated Claremont 7.15 (57)

The Swans kicked two late goals – from the boots of Ryan Davis and Joel Houghton – to snatch the win.
Jarrad Blight had a massive 13 tackles, 26 touches and seven inside 50s for the Swans.
The Tigers had 400 disposals as a team (compared to 360), with Corey Yeo having 36 and Ryan Lim 39. Ian Richardson booted four goals.

Peel Thunder 14.16 (100) defeated Perth 13.9 (87)

Scores were level at the last change, despite Perth having five fewer scoring shots - 11.7 to 10.13.
Aidan Tropiano again starred for the Demons with 35 touches, while Liam McKenna was very good with 29 and seven tackles. Todd Stevenson booted four goals and Callum Walley three – both playing just their ninth league games.
Peel had 14 Fremantle-listed players on the ground. Jacob Ballard had 34 touches and kicked two goals, while nine of the teams 14 goals came from Dockers boots. But injuries weren't great for the AFL side, with Zac Clarke stretchered from the ground after a head knock and Connor Blakely injured his ankle.
