KARACHI: Pakistan’s top-ranked golfer Shabbir Iqbal clinched a second successive title after the final round of the 7th Independence Day Cup Open Golf Championship with an aggregate nine-under-par 207 at the Defence Authority Country & Golf Club in Karachi on Sunday and also won a cash reward worth Rs263,340.

Shabbir, who recently won the Sindh Golf Open Championship, opened the first round of the professional category with two-under 70 to claim fifth place and jumped to the top spot with five-under 67 the following day to aggregate seven-under 137. He then fired two-under 70 to finish the event ahead of the pack.

Shabbir was followed by Muhammad Munir who scored six-under 210, while Hamza Amin and Matloob Ahmed shared the third spot with four-under.

“I had a difficult opening day, but the weather in the second round helped me hit birdies and eagles to get to the top,” Shabbir told The Express Tribune. “The last two days were in my favour and the game turned around. However, the last day was a bit difficult and I was under pressure as Munir was scoring birdies and ended as the top scorer on the last day. I’m just glad my score on day two helped me secure the title.”

In amateurs’ category, Muhammad Naeem won with a score of four-over 220, followed by Zohaib Asif with seven-over 223 and Ghazanfar Mehmood in third with eight-over 224.
