Kumar Sangakkara's illustrious Test career came to a close with a disappointing innings of 18 as India moved into a commanding position against Sri Lanka on day four of the second Test in Colombo.

Sangakkara, who has scored over 12,000 Test runs, fell to a Ravichandran Ashwin offbreak delivery early in Sri Lanka's second innings, bringing down the curtain on one of Test cricket's greatest ever careers.

Angelo Mathew's side trail the visitors by 340 runs with eight wickets remaining heading into the final day's play on Monday.

India began the morning with a lead of 157 runs on 70-1, with Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane both looking to build on overnight scores of 39 and 28.

The two started strongly with Vijay reaching 82 before being bowled by Tharindu Kaushal (4-31) after misjudging a sweep shot.

India's captain, Virat Kohli, came in to bat at three but was on his way back to the pavilion just eight overs later when Kaushal had him trapped lbw for 10.

Rahane continued to score runs at a good rate and went on to reach a well-deserved century, ably assisted by Rohit Sharma (34).

The 27 year-old Mumbai batsman was eventually dismissed for 126, caught by Dinesh Chandimal after nicking a drive off the impressive Kaushal.

Stuart Binny (17), Wriddhiman Saha (13) and Ashwin (19) proceeded to add useful runs as India declared on 325-8, setting Sri Lanka a target of 413 to win in three and a half sessions.

The home side began their chase poorly and were soon reduced to 3-1 after Kaushal Silva looped an Ashwin full-toss to Binny at short midwicket for just one.

Sangakkara arrived at the crease and was given a guard of honour by the Indian players. However, there would be no fairy-tale finish for the 37 year-old, who was dismissed pushing at an Ashwin delivery which caught the outside edge to Vijay at second slip.

Dimuth Karunaratne (25 not out) and Mathews (23 not out) dug in to guide Sri Lanka to 72-2 at the close of play, still 341 runs short of their target for victory, and what would be an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
