Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Saturday termed the conditions in Nirmal Chhaya nari niketan as "grim" and alleged "serious lapses" on part of the police after surprise checks at the women shelter home.
Maliwal spent the entire night at the facility where she interacted with inmates. She went for another check this afternoon and said the Commission would be submitting a report to Delhi government.

"DCW conducted surprise check at Nari Niketan at 8.00 pm, spent entire night there. Situation grim. Extreme suffocation. Many infrastructural problems. Unfortunate mentally challenged n (and) normal women are being forced to live together in the same place," Maliwal said in a series of tweets.

Spoke to each girl individually. Every girl has gone through hell in life before landing up in Nari Niketan. Victims of system and society," she said.

"Maliwal was accompanied by DCW members- Sarika Chaudhury and Promila Gupta- during the visit. "Found women in Nari Niketan who want to leave, claim to have court orders to that effect. Serious lapses seem to be there on police end," she said in another tweet.

"DCW will take cognizance of this issue. Will be coming back today itself and sit with case files and police to help women who want to leave," she added.

The DCW chief assured that the commission will work with Women and Child Development ministry to improve situation. "Women at Nari Niketan living in hell for years. Returning after meeting officer there. DCW will work with WCD ministry to improve situation.

"DCW identified 30 women who know their address n r waiting for requisite action from police to go home. Serious issue, will take cognizance (sic)," she tweeted.

According to DCW officials, Maliwal decided to spend the night as she suspected that the women will not be able to share their issues in presence of officials. "The second visit was conducted to have a meeting with the officials and discuss with them the administrative as well as infrastructural issues at the facility. A report will be prepared regarding the visit and will be submitted to the Delhi Government," they said.
