Zirakpur civic body, police failed to check illegal parking: High Court

The contempt of court petition has been pending in the high court since 2010.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday observed that the Zirakpur Municipal Council as well as the police authorities had failed to check illegal parking of vehicles on the roadside berms.

These observations came from Justice Rajive Bhalla while hearing a contempt of court petition with regard to traffic violations in Punjab. Justice Bhalla said that despite repeated directions, the authorities had failed to comply with court orders in letter and spirit.

The court said that serious efforts needed to be taken by the authorities to ensure that no vehicles were illegally parked to cause chaos on the highway and also to ensure that provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act were strictly followed.

It was noted that the major problematic area is under the Zirakpur flyover where a number of vehicles lead to traffic jams and serious safety issues on the national highway. The court also directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to make the pedestrian marking on the roads in Zirakpur permanent.

The contempt of court petition has been pending in the high court since 2010. The court has been issuing directions and monitoring the steps taken for smooth movement on highways in Punjab.

Festive offer

The case has now been posted for next hearing to September 11.
