Accident, claim friends; sexual assault, find docs
Mumbra girl who joined friends for a long drive admitted to KEM Hospital with injuries and struggle marks.

The police are questioning four friends of a 17-yearold Mumbra girl over suspicion that she was sexually assaulted and dumped on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to make her look like an accident victim.

The girl, who had joined the friends for a long drive, was admitted to KEM Hospital on August 16. She had suffered horrific injuries on her head, neck, face, hands and legs. Initially, doctors began treating her as an accident victim, but when they examined her wounds closely, they realised that she had been sexually assaulted.

KEM doctors immediately alerted the Bhoiwada police, who contacted officials in Raigad district where the friends reside. The police have not been able to speak to the girl as she is slipping in and out of consciousness.

The girl had joined the four friends on a spin on August 15, according to her mother. “She left the house saying she would pick up her girl friend from Vashi and they will meet some boys for an outing. The next morning, I received a call from one of the boys who said their car had met with an accident on the Expressway and that my daughter was seriously injured,” the mother told Mirror on Friday.

“None of the friends were injured, which was very odd.”

According to the friends’ statement to the Khalapur police in Raigad district, the accident took place 19 km from Kalamboli. “I repeatedly tried to call my daughter on August 15 after she didn’t return home, but her mobile was switched off. After I learned about the accident, I rushed to Kalamboli MGM Hospital, where she was first admitted,” the mother said.

The girl’s condition was critical, so doctors there advised the mother to admit her to KEM which they felt was better equipped to treat her.

A forensic expert at KEM said that the girl had head injuries, hand and leg fractures, cuts on her neck and struggle marks all over her body. “It seems that someone hit the girl hard on the head,” the expert said. “The cuts on her neck and struggle marks suggest that she was sexually assaulted.”

A KEM doctor who first examined the girl said that slowly it became clear that she was not just an accident victim. “At this point, we asked our forensic experts to examine her,” the doctor, who didn’t want to be named, said.

MP Khare, assistant subinspector at the Khalapur police station, confirmed that the four friends were being questioned. “The KEM Hospital’s initial report suggests that the girl was sexually assaulted and an attempt was also made to kill her. We have begun a formal inquiry on the basis of the preliminary findings.”
