Mohalla Assi was leaked online after its release was stayed, and it seems like many in Varanasi, where the film is based, had seen it even before it was online.
Mohalla Assi is the second Bollywood movie to be leaked online within a span of 10 days. Last week, a print of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Manjhi was leaked online, ten days ahead of its release. While Manjhi had a watermark of the censor board, Sunny Deol-starrer Mohalla Assi’s leaked print carries a fake symbol of CBFC and the producers say that they are yet to receive the board’s approval on the film.

In June, the film’s trailer was also leaked online before the scheduled date. In the trailer, which the makers claimed was uncensored, a character, dressed as Shiva, was seen using ‘abusive language’. The film, which was scheduled to release on July 3, was stayed for ‘using filthy language’ by a Delhi court following a petition by a Delhi resident . Now the leaked 1 hour 47 minute-film is available on many websites.

Vinay Tiwari, producer of the film, was quoted as saying, “It seems someone from Varanasi had the entire movie stored in his pen drive. As soon as we realised it has been leaked on some websites, we requested them to remove it.”
It seems the producer’s doubt that ‘someone from Varanasi had the entire film’ is not baseless as many people, including several boatmen, in Varanasi had access to the movie even before it leaked online.

Last week, when asked whether the story line of Mohalla Assi is true or not, a Varanasi boatman who ferries tourists from Dashashwamedh Ghat to Assi Ghat (where the movie is based), told us, “Koi sach baat nahin hai. Sab jhooth-jhooth dikhaya hai Banaras ke baare mein film mein. Aisa kuch nahi hota hai foreign tourists ke saath yahan.” When we asked him how he knows what they have shown in the film as it’s release has been stayed, he said, “Kuch ban nahin hai. Internet pe puri film mil jayegi aapko. YouTube dekhiye wahan film hogi.” Although it wasn’t available then, four days after this conversation, the full movie was leaked online.
