M- Town’s own booze playlist

A trip through the kallu songs of M Town
M- Town’s own booze playlist
Bonding over booze, accompanying it with some nostalgic tunes and shaking a leg wearing lungi is one of those age-old fun ‘traditions,’ which are often borrowed by movies too. The songs celebrating drunken camaraderie are popular even on no-liquor fun forums like anthaksharis, thanks to their cool music and catharsis-quotient. Kochi Times plays a few of the popular tunes as the festive season dawns – and of course with the warning, alcohol is injurious to health!
Ennalakale… ( HONEY BEE)

If a movie is titled Honey Bee, can it not have a memorable kallu song? And Jean Paul Lal aka Junior Lal’s debut film didn’t disappoint the boozers.
Mixing the moments of a marriage and a boozers’ get-together in the right unit, the song Ennalakale in the film was quite a winner. Actor Lal and Job Kurien mouth the track, which was composed by Deepak Dev.
Kuttanadan KAYALILE ( Kazhcha)

It’s often said that people of the state joyously mix booze with everything, from a hymn to folk music. Sung with verve by Kalabhavan Mani and Madhu Balakrishnan, the song fromKazchahas a distinct vanchi pattu feel. Manoj K Jayan and Mammootty complement the tunes well with their desi drunk moves, and it’s another Kaithapram song, scored by Mohan Sithara.
Shappu song ( AMEN)

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Amen had many beautifully nostalgic frames, and a shappu pattu featuring its lead actors was one that went on to grab many fans. Conversational and folkish in words and tunes, the song is also quite unlike other kallu songs of M-Town. Sandra Thomas, Fahadh Faasil, Sudhi Koppa and Chemban Vinod are a few of the prominent stars that dance to its tunes in the film.

Anthi Kadappurathu…

Who can forget an intoxicated Manoj K Jayan spiritedly dancing away to this song’s contagious steps in the musically memorable film Chamayam? If in the mood to drink and dance, there’s no better choice than this song for the conventional Mallu boozers, yet. Brilliantly flavoured with some beach life flavour and fishermen lingo, the song penned by Kaithapram and set to tune by Johnson is still often heard on reality shows. It was sung by Jolly Abraham, M G Sreekumar and K S Chithra.
Chendakkoru Kolundeda

Chendakkoru Kolundeda Mandakkoru Kottundeda… from the film Manassinakkare celebrates not just the love over liquor aspect, but also a wonderful friendship between a father and son. The onscreen duo, played by Jayaram and Innocent in the film, find solace at the bottom of a bottle after an emotionally tough day and their reckless drunk antics are quite likably reminiscent of those ‘naadan’ drinkers of Kerala. The song was composed by Ilaiyaraja and worded by Gireesh Puthanchery.
Neeyarinjo Mele Manathu…

Stumbling on their way home from a kallu shappu, Mohanlal and Mala Aravindan sing this evergreen track in the film Kandu Kandarinju, only to be taken over by generations thereafter. It’s been almost two decades since the cool track came to being, but the song penned by Chunakkara Ramankutty and scored by Shyam, has outlived the popularity of the film and is still a go-to for a drunk guy. The loud and slurred singing by the lead actors and the song’s alcohol-friendly lyrics have made it one of the most-loved kallu pattu of Mollywood.
