Slips, trips, falls and more: QR urges passengers to slow down

Passengers on the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast train lines are the most clumsy and careless in the south east.

Queensland Rail has released statistics showing 640 people slipped, tripped, fell or got caught in train doors around the Citytrain network last financial year.

Passengers on the northern lines came off worst with 256 incidents.

QR general manager for Safety Greg Fill said they hoped releasing footage of some of the incidents would highlight the dangers of not taking care at train stations.

"Our CCTV cameras have captured footage of people tripping on an escalator at Roma Street station while not holding on to the handrail and trying to juggle luggage, and another passenger at Strathpine station carelessly rushing across the footbridge, pushing people out of her path and ultimately taking a nasty fall down the stairs," he said.

"Other footage shows one of 80 cases last financial year where a person ignored the departure warnings and whistles and ended up getting their hands caught in closing doors of a train at Central station."

Mr Fill said although the rate of incidents had dropped from the 673 recorded in 2013-14, many passengers were still forsaking basic safety precautions.

"Despite signage at stations and reminders by staff, an alarming number of people are continuing to ignore warnings not to rush, to hold on to the handrail and use the lifts when carrying luggage," he said.

"We understand people lead busy lives, and it is often tempting to rush in order to get to work or other commitments on time, but with trains every 15 minutes or better at most stations on the Citytrain network it's simply not worth risking your safety to catch a train on time."
