Move to slap KAAPA on sex racketeer

Thangal is a high-profile sex racketeer with many political leaders and industrialists on his client list

KOZHIKODE: The City Police wants ‘sex racketeer’ Suhail Thangal, a native of Vythiri, Wayanad, to be imprisoned under the ‘Goonda Act’.

City police commissioner P.A. Valsan said he had submitted the proposal to the district collector for slapping provisions of Kerala Antisocial Activities (Prevention) Act or KAAPA on him.

“The man is known for his dubious ability to trap women in distress by promising them employment,” he told DC. “I hope the collector, who is out of station now, would clear it as soon as he is back”.

Women activists say Thangal is a seasoned criminal specialising in women trafficking and has been involved in more than a dozen sex racket cases in the state.

Punarjani, a forum of lady lawyers, had recently approached the commissioner with the demand to slap KAAPA on him as he posed a “tremendous and continuous” threat to women.

Its leader C.K. Seenath said he was a high-profile sex racketeer with many political leaders and industrialists on his client list.

Even when released on bail, he used to roam around short-stay homes where the girls whom the police rescued from him were staying and used to persuade them to run away.

“There are countless cases against him in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts,” she said.

Medical College Police had recently rescued a 17-year-old Bangladeshi girl, whom he hired for Rs 20,000 from Mumbai for three weeks from another sex racket.

Assistant commissioner (special branch) A. Sajeevan, who is monitoring the case, told DC that though there were many cases pending against him, the city police filed only three cases in the city.
