Bengaluru lost its global image and brand value due to the inefficiency of the BJP administration both in the State and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP), alleged Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.
Claiming credit for making Bengaluru the IT capital during S.M. Krishna’s regime, he alleged that BJP had turned the ‘garden city’ into a ‘garbage city’ and expressed confidence in the Congress’ victory in BBMP elections scheduled for August 22. Fortune 500 companies flocked to the city every week during the Congress administration (1999-2004), he claimed.
After this successful investment flow in this period, successive governments did not match in providing adequate infrastructure to the city. Now, the Congress has set out to “right the wrong”, he said. The misrule of 10 years took its toll on quality of life in the city owing to garbage, roads, transport woes and other issues.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Kharge said the BBMP during the BJP administration had not utilised the grants given by the Centre under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Nearly Rs. 24,000 crore released under the JNNURM was returned owing to the BBMP’s failure to plan projects, he alleged.
