Bangladesh arrests 3 lawyers for funding militant group

Suspects allegedly provided 10 million takas to fund the group’s activities

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s anti-crime agency has arrested three lawyers accused of funding a little-known militant group, Shaheed Hamza Brigade.

The media head of the agency, Sohel Mahmud, in southeastern city of Chittagong told The Associated Press that Sakila Farzana, Liton and Bopon were arrested in the capital, Dhaka, late Tuesday.

He said three, who have appeared before the Supreme Court, allegedly provided more than 10 million takas ($130,000) to fund the group’s activities. He gave no other details and only one name for two of the detainees.

It was not known why they were taken to Chittagong from Dhaka after their arrests.

In April, the agency arrested four suspected members of the militant group in a raid in Chittagong and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition.
