The City Municipal Corporation, which is one of the oldest municipalities in the country, would be celebrating its 150 year of formation on November 1 in a grand manner.
The then town of Salem was constituted as municipality in November 1, 1866.
It celebrated the centenary year of formation in 1966.
Later the municipality was upgraded to a special grade municipality in April 1, 1979 extending its area.
It was upgraded to Municipal Corporation on April 1, 1994.
The corporation is now spread across 91.34 sq km with a population of 8.5 lakh and 60 wards.
C. Rajagopalachari, who was born in Thorapalli in the then Madras Presidency, began his political career by becoming a member and later as chairman of the Salem Municipality in 1917.
It was during the time, a resolution was adopted to close liquor shops in the municipal limits.
The British administrators permitted functioning of liquor shops outside the Salem Municipal limits.
On Wednesday, Mayor S. Soundappan read out a special resolution that called for celebrating the 150th year of formation in a grand manner.
Deputy Mayor M. Natesan said that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa would be requested to participate in the celebrations.
A special fund would be sought for carrying out works in the corporation limits.
