Emanuele Giaccherini is set to quit Sunderland to save his Euro 2016 dream.

Italy midfielder Giaccherini is ready to tell the Black Cats he wants to leave, after being frozen out by manager Dick Advocaat.

The 30-year-old missed out on the World Cup in Brazil last year as injury and a lack of form saw him fail to hold down a regular starting place at the Stadium of Light during the reigns of Paolo di Canio and Gus Poyet.

Giaccherini – who is wanted back in Serie A – is desperate to avoid a repeat ahead of next summer’s finals in France after making just 18 Premier League starts since a £7m move from Juventus in 2013.

His agent, Furio Valcareggi, said: “We’ve had a re-think on the situation and he could decide his future in the next two days.

“Time is limited and we’ll see what happens but he’s a top level figure who needs to play consistently after a season hit by injuries.

“He lost all of last year and now can’t afford to lose another chance. This is the year leading up to Euro 2016 and he really wants to be there.

“Could he return to Italy? We’ll see as anything could happen. He’s certainly not lacking for offers.”
