Provincial police are investigating after someone tried to steal an Olympic silver medal from the Penentanguishene Sports Hall of Fame.

The medal belongs to former NHL player Chris Kontos who won it with Team Canada at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Police say someone broke through three windows to get into the hall of fame sometime between 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night and 6:50 a.m. Wednesday morning.

A camera and tripod worth $4,000 were stolen and the Olympic medal was taken but has since been recovered.

“Total disappointment, you know why, why would somebody go into a sports hall of fame and try to deface it or do something like that,” said Chris Kontos on Wednesday.

Damage to the building is estimated at $5,000.

“We don’t know who we are looking for as of yet but our crime unit and our street crime unit are continuing the investigation,” said OPP Constable Sue Jessop.

Officials with the hall of fame say there is no video surveillance or security system in the building and they are not sure what else, if anything was taken.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
