Justice will take its course - Reeva's uncle

Johannesburg - The uncle of Reeva Steenkamp told News24 on Tuesday that justice would take its course. This follows Justice Minister Michael Masutha's decision to suspend the parole release of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

"I did not hear anything about that, and I don't know if my brother [Reeva's father Barry Steenkamp] heard that. We have been away. We were doing something in celebration of Reeva, because it's her birthday today [Wednesday]. They [her parents] are doing the same thing in Port Elizabeth," Michael Steenkamp said.

Steenkamp would have turned 32 today.

"Without knowing the details, I think justice will serve its course. I am sure that the details must be ironed out, regardless of what the situation is. Where he [Pistorius] is at, procedure must be followed."

Masutha intervened because the decision to release Pistorius on correctional supervision was taken before he had served one sixth of his sentence, he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He referred the decision back to the parole review board.

This followed a petition from the Progressive Women’s’ Movement of SA opposing Pistorius's release on Friday.

Pistorius killed Steenkamp with four shots fired from his gun on Valentine's Day 2013. He was found guilty of culpable homicide, and discharging a firearm in a restaurant, and was sentenced to spend five years in jail.
