Benny Dayal: I am inspired by Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai who loved their hats

Singer Benny Dayal will be performing at an 18-day music festival in Canada on August 23 and he will also be a part of the London Mela on September 6. “I go to live performances with an open mind and believe that the success of the concert depends on the crowd as well. Happy with the feedback for his performance with the Philharmonic Orchestra in London, he says, “10 of my songs had been at the number one position on a British radio channel’s Top 40 chart.
It started with 'Aadat se majboor' and continued till 'Badtameez dil' and 'Bang bang'. So, I was invited to be part of the Orchestra’s annual performance at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.”

While Benny’s home turf is the South Indian film industry, he has also sung a lot of numbers in Marathi and Bengali in the recent past. “Many people have told me that the 'Kangaroo' number which I sang for the Marathi film Highway for which Amit Trivedi scored the music has been a path-breaker. Marathi numbers, I’ve been told, are usually traditional and lilting. Not too many have attempted a club song like this one,” he says, adding,
“For me, language is not a barrier when it comes to music. I don’t ponder over words; they are just sounds and I always try to get them right.”
The singer has worked with AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Salim-Sulaiman and Amit Trivedi here. Says he, “There are so many singers who can do justice to their compositions, and yet, I’m glad they have faith in me to call me again.”
His future line-up includes eight singles in different genres, besides love ballads. He says, “The songs are in Hindi, Tamil, some also have an indie and pop feel to it. Now, I’m working on a dance-fused music video. I’m a trained dancer, and want the video to have a concept.’’ And will we see him with his signature hat in the video? “Yes, I’m inspired by Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai, who loved their hats,” he signs off.
