D’Assisi score two to grab third

St Francis D’Assisi (Borivili) overcame strong resistance from defending champions St Lawrence (Kandivli) to beat them 2-0 and grab the third place in the MSSA U-16 Div I yesterday.

The Borivali school had put up a commendable show throughout the group and knock-out stages but their narrow 0-1 defeat to Don Bosco in the semi-finals meant curtains to their title hopes.

Yesterday, determined to finish the season on a high, D’Assisi started swiftly but deep defending by Lawrence thwarted their strikers. The teams finished goalless in the half-time.

Five minutes into the second half, winger Kevin Shah got a free run on the left flank and curled a cross, which the D’Assisi attackers and goalkeeper missed and the ball settled at the back of the net. They had further joy 10 minutes later, when striker Johnson Matthews gave a diagonal pass which was brilliantly sidefooted by Daksh Shah to the wrong side of the keeper. The score was 2-0.

D’Assisi coach Thomas Barreto was content that the team managed a topthree finish. “If you ask me if I am happy I would say no but at least there is something to cheer about. The boys worked hard but one slack moment meant that our title hopes vanished,” said Barreto mentioning that his two key players fell ill in the semi-final.

Even his counterpart Laxman Singh Bisht credited them for a convincing win. “They played really well today. They clearly deserved to win. If they could have played the same game against Don Bosco (Matunga) they would surely have been in the final,” said Bisht, where his team lost to Campion High School (Fort) in the other semi-final.
