Manafwa- The Manafwa District police commander is being investigated in connection with claims of soliciting a Shs2 million bribe from a businesswoman.

Last month, Ms Gloria Namome, whose gambling machines had been confiscated, alleges that Mr Ambrose Ayebazibwe approached and asked her for Shs2 million promising to return them to her.

This followed an operation against gambling machines conducted by the Resident District Commissioner, Mr Moses Wamoto.

Mr Wamoto banned the game in the district last week after meeting gambling business proprietors.

The Elgon region police spokesperson, Ms Diana Nandawula, confirmed last Friday that police have received the complaint, adding that the matter is being handled by the Professional Standard Unit (PSU).

“The matter is before the PSU department of police and Mr Ayebazibwe has been summoned to record a statement,” Ms Nandawula said.

Ms Namome, who recorded a statement with PSU, said Mr Ayebazibwe convinced her that they had agreed in a meeting with the RDC and district internal security officer that she pays Shs2 million before her machines can be returned.

“I delivered the money to Mr Ayebazibwe but I never got the machines back. I was told later that Mr Wamoto blocked the move. But I have finally received them,” Ms Namome said.

Mr Ayebazibwe, however, denied any wrongdoing, saying he was being framed by some people in the district, who want him to lose his job.

Mr Ayebazibwe said he was aware of the people who are against his method of work and that he reported the matter to the regional police headquarters in Mbale District.

Mr Wamoto said acts of indiscipline would not be tolerated.

“The matter is now before the PSU and if he is found innocent, he will be set free but if found guilty, the law will take its course,” he said.
