Watch the Veronicas Play Two ‘Dark and Twisted’ Singles
Twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso — A.K.A. Australian pop rock duo the Veronicas — took a lengthy break following the release of their 2007 sophomore LP, Hook Me Up. Last year, they returned catchier than ever with their self-titled third album, and the siblings recently performed a pair of new tracks in Rolling Stone‘s studio for our Sperry Sessions series of live performances.
“[‘Cruel’] is what would appear to be the really upbeat, summertime pop song on our record, but if you look a little deeper beneath the surface lyrically, it’s talking about heartbreak,” Lisa says before the pair launch into the tune. “It’s a little dark and twisted like us.”
Along with “You Ruin Me,” “Cruel” is one of the singles off the Veronica’s latest album. In the RS studios, the sisters stripped down both dynamic, dark tracks to just their harmonies and a pair of guitars. Before playing the heart-wrenching ballad “You Ruin Me,” Lisa noted that the song was not meant to make the record’s final cut and was originally intended to be sent to a boy she was no longer talking to.
Around the album’s November release, the Veronicas supported fellow Aussies 5 Seconds of Summer on their mini U.S. tour. In June, the sisters were ready to set out on their own headlining tour but had to cancel the dates following issues obtaining a working Visa. Last month, they revealed that they had already begun working on their fourth album.
