“He worked tirelessly until his final days supporting the cooperative movement. He was my favorite Ninong, always kind and supportive,” Senator Aquino said.

“He brought joy, happiness and laughter to those around him. He will be missed by his loved ones and comrades,” the senator added.

Butz Aquino, who also served as a member of the House of Representatives, was the uncle of President Benigno Aquino III.

Senate President Franklin Drilon mourned the passing of the former senator, who he said had played a very important role in the Edsa revolution in 1986.

“I join the nation in mourning the demise of a good friend, former Senator Butz Aquino,” Drilon said in a statement.

“Butz had played a very important role in the Edsa revolution. He was a civic organizer. He helped formed various organizations including the August Twenty One Movement, whose members bravely fought for the restoration of our freedom.”

“As a legislator, his legacy laws have been benefiting our countrymen, such as the Magna Carta for Small Farmers and the Cooperative Code of the Philippines. On behalf of the Senate, I extend our condolences to the family of Butz,” Drilon added.
