When Prime Minister Narendra Modi crossed the barricade and met the students gathered at Red Fort last year, it came as a surprise. In the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations this year, the Prime Minister’s Office told the organisers that this action was unlikely to be repeated.

But, Modi did repeat his action, stopping his cavalcade to reach out to the over 700 students on Saturday.

“We were told by the PMO that they were 99.99 per cent sure that he would not be meeting the children. So this was unexpected,” said Nutan Duggal, an official with the education department.

“This was unexpected. We were told that he may not come out to meet the children… but he did,” said a security officer at the venue.

“We had coached the children on how to behave in case he did come to meet them,” said Duggal. But in their excitement, the students forgot their instructions.

Festive offer

“We were told not to leave our places. But he came and we wanted to see him… so we tried to move ahead,” said Irshad Ahmad, 15, an NCC cadet.
