St Joseph, Greenlawns play out dull draw

St Joseph (Colaba) played attractive football but were unlucky to have been held to a 1-1 draw by Greenlawns School (Worli) in an MSSA U-16 Division IV match yesterday.
The team, mostly of U-14 players, gave a tough time to their fancied opponents and almost won the game. They have been punching above their weight from past few seasons and this year has been no different despite lack of proper support from the authorities.
The school were the finalists in the fourth division last year but were penalized for flouting the age rules. “I had an assistant who didn’t pay attention to the birth dates and we had to face the penalty. We were denied promotion. This year, we have made sure we have younger boys so that they can play for a couple of more years,” added Swamy.
On Friday, Vivek Balgunhar, who barely stands at five feet, scored a spectacular goal. He intelligently dribbled past a tall defender and coolly finished in the far corner of the post to the delight of the small crowd. But that was not enough for his school to win the game.

The team had to borrow their kits from a local club to participate in the tournament. “We have had hard time to keep things going with respect to football. The school just pays for the entry fees and we have to take care of the rest. A local businessman sponsors the kit and travel of the players. This year we ordered the kit but it has not reached on time,” said St Joseph coach Nagesh Swamy.
