NOWSHERA/ HANGU/ KOHAT: At least 142 suspects were rounded up during search operations in Kohat, Hangu and Nowshera on Friday.

At least 91 people were arrested by Kohat police during a search operation that was initiated after intelligence information suggested terror attacks were being planned for the Independence Day.

A senior police official told The Express Tribune, the information was passed on by the interior ministry after which a crackdown was started on Thursday night.

“Afghan nationals, with no identification papers on them, were also arrested,” the police official said. “They have been shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation.”

The entire operation was monitored by Kohat DPO Sohaib Ashraf. A large cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered during sweeps conducted in various parts of the district.

Hangu

Separately, five Afghan citizens were arrested from the Kata Kanri and Lakhti Bandha areas of Hangu during a search operation conducted by the police, security forces and intelligence officials on Thursday night. The detainees were identified as Farhan, Gul Agha, Dilawar, Bunir and Ghulam. According to a police official, the detained Afghans were residing in the localities illegally. They too were shifted to an undisclosed location. Further investigation is under way.

Nowshera

Azakhela and Akora police also launched a search operation against anti-state elements on special directives of DPO Rab Nawaz Khan in Nowshera. At least 46 suspects, including 13 Afghan citizens, were arrested by teams from both police stations. An AK-47 and two pistols were also seized from their possession. Cases were registered against the detainees.
