Ten days after the body of a Sector 11 resident was found in a village in Raipur Rani, the Ambala-Panchkula police Friday arrested his friend, the owner of Panchkula Regency Hotel in Sector 3, Panchkula, for the murder.

The body of Mukul Bhardwaj, 26, who owned a Tata Docomo Call Centre in Sector 3, was found in the bushes near the banks of Tangri river, in Raipur Rani, on August 5. The post-mortem report indicated that he was strangulated to death using a cloth. Mukul’s car, a Toyota Etios, was found parked near the call centre. According to the family members, Bhardwaj had left home a day before the incident, saying that he was planning to visit Anandpur Sahib with friends.

The accused in the case, Gurcharan Singh alias Mintu, told the police that he and Mukul became good friends as they had their business units close by. According to the police, the two used to often meet at Mintu’s hotel, and were involved in betting.

In a media statement, the Commissioner of Police, Ambala-Panchkula, O P Singh, stated that Singh owed Rs 5 lakh to Mukul, which he had lost to him in a betting game. Police said that Mintu was planning not to pay back the money to Mukul and therefore, decided to kill Mukul with the help of one of his friends, Rinku, a resident of Delhi.

According to the police, Mintu invited Mukul to his hotel a day before the incident and offered him a drink which he had laced with a sedative.

Festive offer

After Mukul became semi-conscious, they took him in his car to Raipur Rani, where they strangulated him to death. They then dumped the body at 4.30 am, returned to Panchkula, and parked Mukul’s car near the call centre.

Police said the two also took away Mukul’s laptop and other belongings in order to make the case appear to be that of robbery. However, in a CCTV footage, Mukul was last seen leaving the hotel with Mintu around 1.45 am. The post-mortem report also indicated that the death occurred between 2 am and 5 am.
A case under section 302 (murder) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Raipur Rani police station. The accused will be produced in court Saturday.
